Garmin Bounce Review: Why This Kid’s Smartwatch Just Makes Sense

We bought the Garmin Bounce for our 9-year-old son, and it has quickly become one of the best tech decisions we’ve made as parents. It’s more than just a smartwatch — it’s a communication tool, a GPS tracker, a motivator for healthy habits, and a safe stepping stone between total dependence and full independence.

One of the biggest advantages is that it gives our son the ability to check in — quickly, simply, and without a smartphone. Whether he’s biking with friends or we’re dropping him off at practice, he can let us know if something changes or if he needs anything. He’s old enough now that we’re giving him more freedom, and this watch makes that possible without sacrificing peace of mind.

It’s also incredibly helpful given our family dynamic. He splits time between two households, and the Garmin Bounce makes it easy for him to stay in touch with both me and my wife, and his mom; everyone uses the Garmin Jr. app, and we all stay connected. It works seamlessly.

  During class hours, the screen locks to prevent distractions, while still keeping tracking and emergency features active.

  It tracks steps, sleep, and activity. You can even set goals and assign fun rewards through the app. Our son actually gets excited about completing healthy tasks. It’s become part of his daily routine.

  For all this functionality, the subscription is surprisingly reasonable — about $15/month. No contracts, no surprises.

A Few Minor Drawbacks

If there’s one thing I wish Garmin would improve, it’s the battery life. It usually needs to be charged daily. That’s not terrible, but compared to my own Garmin Instinct 2, which can go for weeks, it’s definitely something to be aware of.

There can also be a slight delay in message delivery or location pings depending on reception, but to date it hasn’t been enough to cause concern.

Final Thoughts

The Garmin Bounce does everything we need it to do — and more. It keeps our son connected to the people who matter, helps him develop healthy routines, and gives us peace of mind without handing him a full-blown smartphone, which personally, I don’t think kids should have. In a world where social media and unlimited internet access are everywhere, I’m not in a rush to introduce that to my kids.
