- There are no garbage cans (I accidently put an empty water bottle in a postal box thinking it was a garbage can)
- No one wears sunglasses
- No matter how fast I walk, everyone still walks much faster than I do
- The city is a lot more health focused with their restaurant menus than North America
- There’s a lot of choice of gyms and personal training centres (almost too much choice)
- Everyone keeps thinking we’re American (“What’s the best way to insult a Canadian? Call him an American”)
- The best way to see the city? Go for a run in a new area everyday.
- People wear a lot of black
- The TV commercials are VERY odd
- People give us really funny looks when we say “You sound like you’re from London”
1. There aren’t rubbish bins in train stations or some central areas (like the City, City centres etc) because one of the IRA’s favourite places for hiding bombs was bins and cars. Getting rid of the bins reduced the options for planting bombs basically.
2. Because it is barely ever sunny, at least in September. Through Summer and Winter people wear them more – low winter sun, especially when driving.
3. Because everyone is always trying to do a 15min journey in 10 lol
10. I’m guessing you haven’t quite develop an ear for the different English accents yet, let alone the different London accents.
1. They are, been a couple of attacks this year but in N.Ireland rather than the mainland
10. Can’t at work and it wasn’t showing as a link before, will watch later.
So jealous that your running routes include such awesome landmarks. Makes me even more excited for my 1/2 next month when I get to run past the Eye, Parliament etc too

Yeah, the lack of garbage bins is one of my gripes too! Bloody IRA! :P
I got to know the city by running it too. And I wear sunglasses! ha ha
I have been here for over three years now and sometimes I feel like I’ve lived here all my life, and other times I feel like I’ve only been here for a week. Some things I’ll probably never get used to, other things have just become second nature to me. Anyway, WELCOME and I hope you enjoy living in one of the most bewildering but amazing cities on earth :)
PS: Any questions please ask, I’m always happy to help a new Londoner!
well, I don’t live there, as you may remember, but I was there this past weekend. I also had trouble finding rubbish bins! I have to say though I had my sunglasses on almost all weekend though – what glorious weather we had!
I *am* originally from the US and I hate when people think I’m American! (that’s not an insult to Americans, that’s just me being out of the country for over 16 years!)
What kind of accent do you have? Being gone from the states for 16 years, do you still have an American accent?
I’m living in London now. I put my trash in other people’s bags of trash on the curb. Everyone thinks I’m from Boston. (I’m from Georgia.) I wear sunglasses, but not on the Tube like a lot of people. And I really hate those crazy looking strollers and the stupid scooters that all the kids ride around on because they all go right out in front of crazy taxi drivers or down the Tube steps and I always get really scared.
Oh, and the homeless people are far less aggressive here.
